Book Review: The Zen Commandments

by Dean Sluyter

“A saint is a very simple man: when he walks, he walks, when he talks, he talks, and that’s all.” This is one of the many quotes Dean Sluyter uses in his book, The Zen Commandments. He maintains this simple style and approach as he weaves text and stories, both ancient and modern, that support us in applying spiritual principles to our day to day living. He is brings clarity and practicality to finding, as he says in the subtitle, inner freedom. As someone who has read many books on Buddhist teachings, I am very happy to have come upon Sluyter’s book. He leaves out all the jargon and complicated systems, and dives right into how to bring the simple instructions of Buddhist teachings into real life situations.

Review by Rev. Ruth Barnhart, a staff minister at Center for Spiritual Living, Santa Rosa.
